A fashion is merely a form of ugliness so unbearable that we are compelled to alter it every six months. --Oscar Wilde

Best Blog Reader Comments

By admins | July 9, 2009

In the just over a year that 39thandbroadway.com has been up and running we have received more wonderful readers than ever expected.  One of the best aspects of running this blog is the community it creates.  We absolutely adore receiving any and all comments from you.  We only wish it was possible to regularly reply to each and every one, (yes, we are trying to get better at this) but keep in mind even if we don’t reply we’ve enjoyed reading your comments.  That said, for one reason or another there are certain comments that consistently stay with us.  So below we have picked some of our all time favorite comments from our lovely readers.

Sub-par Working Conditions in the Garment Center
(Regarding the overwhelming presence of rats in our fashion buildings)

Debbie Mingrino
Yes we still have our furry friends living here in 1407, many of them, it is just a part of living here in NY. I have eaten at Harrys and have had a roach run over my plate of food, upon which I complained to the waitress that I did not want the food, the owner was devastated that I did not plan on paying for the food. I told them to call the police, but there was no way I was paying for the food. I just got up and left.  Be careful because the other critter that I seemed to have come across is grass hoppers, I have found a few in my salad from local salad places. Just be sure to look closely at your food before you eat each fork full!!

Shop Comme des Garcons
(Regarding Comme des Garcons line for Target)
ShantyIrish
So that is what Comme des Garcons looks like. Rip, pin, stick another pin, oops blood RIIIP. I don’t like it. I think its ugly and should have stayed on the cutting room floor in whatever country it is outsourced to be manufactured in. Names are not everything.

Fashion Words We Wish Would Die!!
(Regarding our list overused annoying fashion words)
Lacky
Integrity- as in “this sweater has so much integrity” or “the integrity of the top will get lost if we dumb it down” Inanimate objects do not have integrity… people do… but not people who use this word!!!!!!

What’s In A Name For New York’s Garment Center?
(Regarding the history of the Garment Center)
Midwestfashionista
What a fascinating article, complete with the incredible history of the area. The Triangle Fire, a subject of many books, both fiction and non-fiction, remains a symbol of the role that the garment industry has played in America’s past and will continue to do in the future.

Couture Coke-Heads?
(Regarding the badly dressed fashion students busted for drugs)
fashion herald
oh, well said! You’re at FIT ladies, not Iowa State! My apologies to Iowa, but I grew up there so I know.

Freebie For The Funniest Fashionista
(Regarding our Pam/Paris funny caption competition)
Josh
I wish my sex tape got the reviews yours got

Death Of The Original Idea
(Regarding the stifling of creativity in the design process)
Katie
In being so focused on that bottom line I think everyone forgets about creativity and it has a domino effect on what designers make (they have to think about what their bosses will approve, the market reps thinking about what buyers will want), then what buyers order (they have to think about their customers will actually buy, with a strong emphasis on those safe items that will have mass appeal and be best-sellers). And then instead of doing their own research or really studying their customer, a lot of places seem to be utilizing the same forecasts and trend reports. It’s one thing to use them, but then I feel like places aren’t even creative in how they adapt the ideas they find from any particular source and so of course customers choose fast fashion (exception being investing in classics for quality) over designs that aren’t even trying to be innovative or differentiate themselves from what’s already out there. I remember a few years ago suddenly feeling like I was seeing the SAME thing EVERYWHERE, for entirely different markets or customers and all kinds of prices, and I notice it more every season whether it was those tops/dresses with sequin/paillettes around the neckline or neon yellow or gladiator sandals. I realize the fashion life cycle has gotten shorter, but people aren’t stupid. I’d be willing to pay for something completely original but a lot of what I see is, to quote a song from The Pierces, “boring!” So are original ideals out there? I think so, they’ve just gotten harder to find because stores aren’t willing to gamble on them and with this crap economy I think shops have even gotten more risk-averse…

Equality for Women in the Fashion World
(Regarding the shoddy treatment of women fashion professionals)
Claire
Why don’t women working in the fashion industry receive the same kinds of benefits as those working in other industries?  Supply and demand. There are far more qualified, talented and hard working people who want these positions than there are positions. They don’t *have* to provide maternity leave (or sick leave or even health insurance) to retain people.  How many teenage girls dream of a glamorous job in the fashion industry? How many FIT and Parson’s students (not to mention those in the Human Ecology departments of 4 year colleges in po-dunk towns across the country) would do anything just for an unpaid internship to get their foot in the door? And I can’t tell you how many thirty-forty something smart, capable, sharp, intelligent, design savvy women I’ve met who want to change careers and go into… drumroll please… fashion! I hate to say it, but with the economy tanking and spending on fashion contracting and more companies going out of business, the employers left will be able to offer less and demand more. For those of you who can hack it, I admire your tenacity.

Lady Gaga, Latest Celebrity Designer?
(Regarding Lady Gaga’s advice on what it takes to launch a fashion line)
WendyB
Oh noes! I forgot to talk to Akon before starting my business. Is it too late?

Midwest Shopping In Our Neighborhood
(Regarding the opening of JC Penny on 34th Street)
Elizabeth
I guess that’s part of Boomerg’s plan to make the city a more profitable business: making Midwesterners feel more “comfortable.” It’s one thing to go to the ancient, established, and behemoth Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s.  But even tourists don’t come to Manhattan to go to JC Penny’s.  Every New York resident who goes to shop there should be tagged and forcefully relocated to Staten Island.

The Evil Fashion Boss
(Regarding working with difficult bosses)
Too Many Tights
Wow – great article. One interesting point – I noticed a lot of ‘hers and not a lot of ‘hims’…. just saying!  My boss is a completely paranoid as well. Worst thing is I work for myself.

Ode To The Techpack
(Regarding our Techpack inspired poetry)
Richard Lowe
Priceless:This is my life right now….my average tech pack is 19-27 pages for one garment and it’s painful.
***Ode to Techpack by Richard Lowe***
Pages Pages Pages
How you fly by so slowly
Pages Pages Pages
How you make me feel so lowly
Measurements, buttonholes, details galore
How I wish you didn’t make me feel like your whore
Inseams, outseams, pleats, and flanges
Papercuts that require large bandages
Oh pages pages pages
How you fly by so slow
Damn pages pages pages
Fuck this time to blow…:)

Bravo’s New Fashion Show
(Regarding our review of Bravo’s new Project Runway rip-off TV show)
MarkD
Seriously, Kelly Rowland? She just comes off as defensive and nasty. If she’s qualified to critique, then I’m OVER-qualified. Try Googling some images of her, you’ll see what I mean. What a Trashionista!  I can’t say Isaac fares much better. He’s like some sour old lady at temple carping about the kids.  This show is all venom, no soul. This thing is only compelling in the way “Wife Swap” is compelling – tune in to see the trash, but after an episode or two, you’ve seen enough.  To quote Isaac himself in the previews for episode two, “Don’t insult us with a mere knockoff.” Amen, sistah, now take your own advice.

Chick Downtown Grand Give-Away
(Regarding our Real Housewives funny caption contest)
Lola
Ariel thought that everything would be fine with her sisters and King Triton after she left the sea… but after receiving their Christmas card in the mail, she realized that she was sorely mistaken.

What is your “I Quit” fantasy?
(Regarding quitting an unsatisfying job)
Alicia
True story: I told HR that my IQ was dropping by the day…left with a package.
