Go Green – Yes you!!
By admins | April 7, 2008

We all know we should go green, we’ve seen Al Gore’s movie. We know we are killing our planet. Right now we have so drastically depleted our natural resources and polluted our environment that it seems like an overwhelming problem beyond our own ability to repair. Yeah sure, we change to energy saving light bulbs and recycle our trash but does that little change matter and is there more we could do? Well yes it does matter, every little bit you can do to reduce your carbon footprint the better. The good news for you is that as a New Yorker, your carbon footprint is already pretty low. You use public transportation and you don’t heat and cool a McMansion so you’re already way ahead of most Americans! But as fashion designer you also have an opportunity to make an even bigger impact.
Eco-friendly clothing is not just good for our planet, it’s trendy and marketable! Green clothing has moved far beyond the occasional hippie hemp skirt. From Marc Jacobs to Stella McCartney high designers are going green. Even stores like the Gap and Banana Republic have had go green campaigns. And believe it or not Wal-mart has jumped on the bandwagon, although at their price point it is more of a challenge. So I encourage you to at least brainstorm on how to bring this idea to your company and incorporated eco-friendly items into your lines. Some ways for you to do this? Start with fabric, try using sustainable fabrics or recycled product. Organic cotton is huge for denim right now, and a great selling point. What about all natural dyes for your fabrics, no more chemicals. For those in production/sourcing finding energy efficient factories that use solar/wind power. Too much? How about simply using recycled materials/paper for all hangtags and labeling. Or even encourage your company to donate a percent of its profit to an environmental charity. There are lots of options, so for your next big design meeting why not bring going green to the table.
