— Looking for a non-traditional wedding gown but at an affordable price? Well, if you can wait until Valentine’s Day 2011 you’re in luck. The young and quirky apparel company Urban Outfitters is launching a bridal brand! Yes, you heard that right, but have no fear of ironic screen printing on your gown; the brand is likely to be an off-shoot of their romantic vintage brand, Anthropologie.

— Last week Tommy Hilfiger spoke to students at Notre Dame about working in the fashion industry and his success. One interesting quote from Tommy, “If you are considering inventing something that two people and a dog will be interested in, go back to the drawing board,” he said. “I put my vision through a filter. I knew there was great opportunity in making clothes people would wear and be able to afford. You will be successful if you’re doing something you love.”

— The fabulous fashion site, Fashionista asks the questions, do fashion interns need to be paid? For most of us the unpaid internship was a right of passage, and like all things in school you earned credits not dollars, but should that continue? Read their informative post here.

— So, what is more annoying than celebrities launching fashion labels? When celebrities’ children do.  Madonna and her daughter Lordes have launched the junior label, Material Girl for Macy’s based on Lordes style and her design ability (right, not her mother’s fame and name recognition, sure). Particularly grating is Madonna’s comment, “If Lola wasn’t so completely involved in the line, designing, consulting, whatever you want to call it, I wouldn’t do it. Really she does most of the work, honestly.” We know what we’d call it – licensing your name out.

— More fashionistas scumb to the draw of reality TV. In case you haven’t heard Scott Schumann aka The Sartorialist is said to be working on his own show. All we know now is that it also involves his girlfriend and fellow blogger Garance Dore Vague. BTW if you are a fan of The Sartorialist check out the (we think even more entertaining) kitty version, The Catorialist.

— Emaciated high fashion models are nothing new in the industry. Recently the folks in charge of Brazil’s fashion week have publicly voiced their concerns and intent to increase their already structured health requirements for models. Interesting, they blamed the US and Europe for hindering their attempts by encouraging the gaunt aesthetic and embracing models that are refused by Brazil.

— Temperley’s famous winter sale is going on now. Don’t miss a chance to snag some seriously discounted (75% off)  designer dresses and separates. At 453 Broome Street by Mercer until 1/31 this is one sale not to miss!

— Thinking about buying a knock-off designer bag down on Canal street? Not only does that hurt the sales of the legit and struggling apparel industry but it supports sweatshop laborers who make these cheapo bags. Well apparently, the city has decided to crack down on the crowded Canal street vendors and raided the street shutting down 16 illegal shops in the process last week.

— What is a nice Jewish boy doing designing swastika handbags? That’s the questions we’d like to ask Marc Jacobs.  So who would pay $1495 for some designer Nazi swag?

— Zac Posen is the next big designer doing a diffusion line for Target. While the goods won’t be available until April, the Look Book is out now. So take a peak, here.

Welcome back readers!  Welcome back to the work week after a long month of last minute deadlines, vacation days, travel, and holidays.  It is unfortunately time to get back to the real world.  Welcome to 2010.  Welcome to a new decade. Welcome back to 39th & Broadway! Here’s a little sampling of some fashion scoop you may have missed over the last month while unwrapping gifts and drinking champagne. Enjoy!

- Finally! Project Runway, our favorite fashion reality TV show is coming back to NYC where it belongs. In the seventh season for the show, Tim Gunn and an eclectic group of aspiring designers from around the globe (Dominican, China, Mexico, Philippines…) are back for some fierce competition. The new season premieres on January 14th on the Lifetime Network!

- Well, it was only a matter of time until some heads rolled over at Ungaro. Post the Lindsay Lohan debacle CEO Mounir Moufarrige has been reportedly forced out. But unfortunately, despite our pleas, Lindsay is still in! WTF?

- PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) has a new face for their I’d Rather Go Naked campaign. Our favorite NYC reality star Bethenny Frankel from the Real Housewives has posed in the buff (and a lot of photo-shopping) for Peta. Bethenny has been busy lately, besides Peta photo-shoots and Twitter wars with Rachel Zoe, Bethenny has finally gotten knocked up by Fiancé Jason Hoppy and is shooting her very own reality TV show from Bravo.

- J-Lo rocked it out on New Year’s Eve in Times Square wearing a sheer bodysuit covered in bling. No doubt J-Lo looked gorgeous, but we have to say this ensemble was not the most flattering, nor age appropriate for the curvaceous mother of two.  Besides, haven’t we seen this look before, perhaps a decade ago on Britney Spears circa VMAs 2000?

- If you are a fan of Target collaborations, Rodarte’s line debuted last month. Did you go? What did you think?  One unique element of this collection is that Rodarte used a fashion blogger as the line’s ambassador, which blogger was chosen? None other than the controversial “baby blogger” 13 year old, Tavi. Check out her adorable video below.

The countdown has begun–not only until the end of the year–but until the end of the first decade in the 21st century.  That’s kind of amazing to think about.  Styletastic and Sway, Sway, Away! both look at fashion from the Oughts with two distinctly different visions. — Once again the Victoria Secret fashion show will be held in NYC.  After a 5 year hiatus the VS Angels, plus several supermodels, will be strutting their stuff on November 19^th at the Armory.  Get your tickets while you can, it’s sure to be a blast with the Black Eyed Peas performing.

— Looking for work? Don’t care about getting paid? Okay, we know what your thinking, but Diane Von Furstenberg has a great opportunity for somebody looking to gain a little fashion experience. It is an unpaid internship lasting about four months and there are several slots open, for more info click here.

— It’s official Fashion’s Night Out was such a huge global success, that it’s getting an encore in 2010.  Mayor Bloomberg and Vogue’s Anna Wintour have agreed that the shopping event of the year, was so good for the fashion industry, as well as, New York’s economy, that it must be brought back.  We’re awaiting details…..

— Breaking news out of Milan: Versace has been forced to cut 350 jobs.  These cuts are due to, “how the economic downturn is forcing independent fashion labels to cut costs.” Sad news about the jobs but are we the only ones that didn’t see Versace as an indie label?

— The blogesphere is full of street style sites, some good, some bad, but all pretty similar.  Usually taking shots of the mostly young, beautiful, and fashion forward.  So we were pleasantly surprised to stumble across this blog, Advanced Style which is a street style site for the senior set.  We especially liked the photo above, of the silver fox spotted in the Garment Center.

— It seems the greatly anticipated face-lift for MAGIC, the huge Vegas fashion trade show, is confirmed. There will now be two separate venues,  and each will possess its own modern architectural design, a reconfigured merchandising approach and an engaging and informative litany of content, partners, events and programs – all tailor-made to inspire and ignite the marketplace.

Finally, after a year of speculation and lots of drama designer Marc Jacobs has tied the knot.  Well, perhaps we should say, has probably tied the knot.  Marc supposedly wed his longtime Brazilian boyfriend Lorenzo Martone in Provincetown Massachusetts at the end of August.  It seems the ceremony was an uber-private event, you know how fashion divas love our VIP only space.  However the reception, aka after party, was a serious blowout filled with celebs and fashion heavyweights.

So why hasn’t anyone heard confirmation on this story? Rumor has it, that not only has Marc become a married man but he has also become a reality star.  Marc Jacobs is set to become the latest “real housewife” in the gay version of the popular Bravo show. The new show will be titled, “Kept” and filmed in NYC. So perhaps, the wedding was filmed as part of the reality show and confidentiality agreements were signed. Although some people do seem to be slipping, from Style.com’s Derek Blasberg Twitter, “Going for a drink at the new Mrs. Martone-Jacobs’ apartment, then OUT. The wife’s away this weekend.”

Thought we’d give you a little SATC fix today. The fabulous four are back and shooting the second Sex and the City movie, where else? But here in NYC.  You may have seen them shooting around town or perhaps some of our readers have participated. Over the summer there was an epic turnout from local New Yorkers wanting in on the action, from reading the following SATC ad.

Open Call - Fashion Models, Celebrity types, Upscale Socialites, Fashionistas, Urban Club goers, Gays and Lesbians, International types (Middle Eastern, Arabic, Asian, European, British), Professional Soccer Players.

Now with filming under way, secrets and plot lines are exposed. Some of the scoop we’ve heard: Big and Carrie try for a baby, Big gets enticed by a hot young colleague when working abroad, Harry potentially cheats on Charlotte, Samantha will suffer greatly from the economic downturn, and Miranda opens a restaurant! Hmm, hard to picture that last one, but who knows. We thought we’d share some photos below, courtesy of gossip queen, Perez Hilton.  From these photos it seems we can count on an 80’s flashback and Samantha finally tying the knot (gasp)!

Speaking of sex and New York City, we were lucky enough to received an award from one of the city’s sexiest bloggers, Wendy Brandes.  The “Superior Scribbler” Award from the Scholastic Scribe has made its way around the web to over a thousand bloggers in all genres. — In case you missed it, YRB Magazine has done the impossible.  They managed to make the smoldering Kim Kardashian into a rather homely looking tranny.  No?

— Well, it seems someone’s been throwing a pre-fashion week bitch fit; who could that be?  Apparently Zack Posen has lost a seven year run as the finale show.  Not only that, but he has been downgraded to a lesser venue outside the tents.  And possibly in the biggest FU to Zack, he was replaced by, none other than, Tommy Hilfiger.

— Forget 30 is the new 20, try 80 is the new 20! Designer Fanny Karst, has a fashion line of bold, graphic, printed pieces geared for the senior set with an attitude.  This 26 year old Brit has created a quirky line for grandma to rock! What do you think, would your gran go for it?

In case you haven’t noticed we’ve had an awfully rainy summer here in the NYC area.  So what’s a fashionista to do when the beach is out of the question and shopping downtown promises to be a soggy endeavor?  Well, we have a suggestion for you, how about hitting up a museum?   Here are a couple fantastic fashionable exhibits that make the perfect rainy day excursion and perhaps will help inspire your next collection.

The Museum at FIT

Exhibit - Fashion and Politics - July 7, 2009 – November 7, 2009

A chronological exploration of over 200 years of politics as expressed through fashion. The term politics not only refers to the maneuverings of government, but also encompasses cultural change, sexual codes, and social progress. Throughout history, fashion has been a medium for conveying political ideologies and related social values. Fashion has addressed such important themes as nationalism, feminism and ethnic identity, as well as significant events and subcultural movements.  Featuring over one hundred costumes, textiles and accessories, Fashion & Politics examines the rich history of politics in fashion. The exhibition’s introductory gallery will explore the theme of American nationalism and will feature a woman’s costume, circa 1889, printed with an American flag motif, as well as Catherine Malandrino’s iconic Flag Dress, worn by numerous celebrities and socialites to express patriotism after 9/11, and then again in response to the 2008 elections. Also featured will be an “IKE” dress from the 1956 Eisenhower Campaign, a “NIXON” paper dress, and memorabilia from the historic 2008 presidential elections.

Exhibit – GlassWear – July 15-September 20 2009

The international exhibition GlassWear, organized jointly by the Museum of Arts and Design and the Schmuckmuseum, Pforzheim, Germany, displays over 120 imaginative and visually exciting glass jewelry by 60 of the world’s leading jewelry artists. GlassWear conveys the potential of glass in jewelry through provocative concepts and masterful techniques featuring an eclectic mix of renowned artists and young, up-and-coming jewelers from around the world.

Exhibit – Fashioning Felt – March 6-September 7, 2009

This exhibition will explore the varied new uses of felt-an ancient material, believed to be one of the earliest techniques for making textiles. Made by matting together wool fibers with humidity and friction, felting requires little technological expertise and is an extremely versatile material. The exhibition will begin with historic examples of felts, showcase innovations in handmade felts, and feature contemporary uses of industrial felt in a range of fields, including product design, fashion, architecture, and home furnishings. The exhibition is being organized by Susan Brown, assistant curator, Textiles.
