Chanel Pavilion Opens
By admins | October 25, 2008
Looking for something to do this weekend? How about a trip to Central Park? Not only can you take in the stunning fall foliage, but you can also indulge your love for all things glamorous and intrinsically Chanel. The Chanel Pavilion is a mobile art exhibit designed by Iraqi architect, Zaha Hadid. Inside the pavilion’s coiled form you can wander through the spiral space displaying art from various artists that were inspired by Chanel’s classic quilted handbag.
Recently the New York Times gave this exhibit a scathing review, mostly criticizing the timing of such extravagance during the current economic crisis. They also criticized it as a marketing ploy and blatant consumerism which is in opposition to Olmstead’s vision of Central Park. The New York Times warned visitors they would be going, “deeper into a black hole of bad art and superficial temptations, straying farther and farther from the real world outside”. While we certainly get their point we have to respectively disagree with the NYT. Anyone living or working in NYC knows you cannot walk a block without being overwhelmed by intense consumerism and ridiculously priced merchandise. Be it the Berkin bag in the window, the 5M dollar condo across the street, or the $200 a plate tasting menu at the latest ”it” restaurant, we are bombarded with absurd extravagances on a daily basis, so one more is not going to do us in. Also what the NY times completely overlooked, and which is crucial to those fashionistas on a budget is the fact that the exhibit is free! Yes, in these tough economic times were we must watch every penny, there is actually something to do in NYC that won’t cost a dime. So instead of dropping $20 at MoMa, come check-out the Chanel Pavilion in Central Park.
