Creative Consumption
By admins | July 16, 2009
The following piece is from a dear friend of one of our regular contributors. Since both work in this crazy business of fashion, they often meet in midtown for after work drinks to bitch and moan about the ups and downs of the fashion industry. Having a friend to commiserate with is often a priceless gift. The other day, however, the designer featured below had just received a promotion at the designer label she works for. Full of excitement she relayed to our contributor many positive and impressive reasons why she loves designing for a living. After a bit of coaxing she agreed to write it up for us, enjoy.
I am a designer. I create, that is what I do. I get paid to bring beauty into the world. Who could find a flaw in that life? Overcome with obstacles, and emotionally draining workdays those are the truths I focus on. Growing up, I was always a creative and artistically inclined child. Fortunately for me, my parents supported and nurtured this by enabling me to attend a top fashion school. After years of hard work and paying my dues, the artist in me has taken center stage. I would advise anyone in the industry, struggling in their career or in this recession, to remember that creativity as a profession is a gift. The gift may not come easily or quickly, but when it does, take a moment to relish in it. Often, I get bogged down with the day to day technical aspect of fashion like fabric POs and countless fittings, that I forget what I am doing is an act of creation. It is a true indulgence to be responsible for bearing a new concept into the world. Recently upon seeing designs reflecting my sensibilities in our label’s international ad campaign my inner creative child felt satisfied. Anyone considering a career in fashion or really any creative field, prepare for a long and difficult road, but a truly soul satiating ending.
