Designer Trimmings at Daytona

                                                                             Nina & Nick

The Garment Center is the heart of New York City’s fashion industry.  One of the best things about the garment center besides all the designers and manufactures who call it home, are the outstanding trim shops.  There is no question among us about who is our favorite trim shop;  it’s Daytona Trimmings at 251 West 39thstreet.  Not only does it have some of the best ribbons, elastics, lace, and more, it also has excellent customer service and that old school mom and pop New York vibe to it.  The store is currently owned and run by Iberhiem and Nina Ebass who plan to pass on the family business to their son Nick whose grandfather actually started Daytona in 1946.  Unlike many trim and fabric shops in the Garment Center, Daytona supplies not only wholesale customers but retail customers as well.  While designers, wholesalers, and manufactures are their core customers, Daytona also does big business with fashion students, tourists, home sewers, and crafters.  Iberhiem made it clear to us that the shrinking of the garment center has drastically affected his business; according to him the current recession has little effect on his bottom line in comparison to the effect of the manufacturers disappearing from the neighborhood.  One of the largest issues is that so much production is now done overseas.  Iberhiem estimated that his domestic production business has shrunk since 2002 to approximately 10% of what it used to be.  It is small businesses like this that are suffering most from the shrinking of New York’s Garment Center.  So, if you have not yet signed the petition to help enforce zoning regulations in the garment center, we are reminding you again to click here and do so.

For those of you who have never been, Daytona is a one-stop-shop for all your trimming needs.  Personally, we love all their grosgrain ribbon, at really competitive prices.  According to Iberhiem their most popular items are the lace trimmings; and boy do they have a serious collection.  For the retail customer, their holiday season products and wedding season trimmings are fan favorites.  In our experience Daytona is always a staple go to when needing rhinestones or heat seal studs.  Those of you longtime fans of Daytona, may be aware of their affinity for cats.  We were sad to hear their old cat had passed away, however they do have two new store cats now who believe it’s their shop of course.  Pictured above are the 2 year old cats aptly named, Ric and Rac!
