Digitally Inspired Style

Recently, one fashion student made headline news for her high-tech dress design. Every fashion student dreams that their pieces will gain worldwide acclaim and publicity. For Georgie Davies that recognition came while still a student, for a design that was part of a school project. Her school, London College of Fashion, held a competition sponsored by Sony Ericsson, to create innovative fashion. Georgie’s winning dress was actually quite adorable and stylish in its own right, but also high-tech. The dress is designed so when the wearer receives an incoming call light will move up and down through the translucent scales throughout the bodice. As we recently reported fashion has come to a bit of a stalemate, perhaps e-clothing is the breath of fresh air that we all need.
While discussing luxury fatigue and designer handbags with a coworker, we came to realize our “it” bag and shoe obsessions have been replaced by our geek chic love of gadgets. As the coworker said, “If someone could get Steve Jobs to design a car or launch a fashion line, our economy would be saved.” Now, after reading how Sony Ericsson inspired Davie’s dress pictured with Maria Sharapova above, just imagine what the iPhone could inspire!

Wasn’t this high-tech trend already done a couple years ago? I wouldn’t wear this one – what if you were on a date and your horrid ex calls you? It’s a little hard to ignore calls gracefully when your whole body lights up!

Good point, I guess we are just hoping high-tech isn’t just a trend but that the technology becomes a legitimate design element rather than the usual trims, prints, and fabrications. Perhaps the cell phone/lights isn’t the best use but it’s a step.

What a cool idea, and cute design. I met a guy here in SF that works for a start up that makes clothing that heats up and can also charge your cell phone, I got to see the product as he was wearing it. Only problem, it was very “outdoorsy”. Soon enough there will be fashionable pieces, as long as the technology is there. My boyfriend is a programmer at Apple, it’s amazing how many people are so overly obsessed with apple. I’m just happy he has a great job because as a hair designer, mine has been really slow lately.
