Fashion Designers Saving the Garment Center

As we are all aware, our little neighborhood has been struggling in recent years.  The Garment Center has lost many businesses and jobs due to the high cost, zoning issues, and overseas competition.  However, there are still thousands of us here and New York is still the fashion capital of the U.S. if not the world.  To help improve the situation in our neighborhood many designers and manufacturers have partnered together to help save the Garment Center.

During last year’s Fashion Week designer Anna Sui helped bring the issue to the mainstream media.  She joined with several other big name designers to sell the black “Save the Garment Center” t-shirts and wear them throughout fashion week.  The tees have the names and contact information for local officials, who control zoning and regulation laws, on the back.  This week, in an interview with the New York Times Sui said, “Without a production core, it becomes increasingly difficult for young designers to set up shop in the city. When I was starting, there were wool mills in the U.S. that could make you anything, the U.S. used to produce the most beautiful cotton denim in the world. Now all that is gone.”

During this year’s Fall ‘09 Fashion Week, designer Nanette Lepore is continuing the pressure to save the garment center.  She made sure every seat at her fashion show received a special postcard with a message to help save our neighborhood and keep our industry alive. The postcards are stamped and addressed to Mayor Michael Bloomberg and City Hall.  Now it’s time, to do you part and click HERE to sign the official petition to help save the garment center.
