A fashion is merely a form of ugliness so unbearable that we are compelled to alter it every six months. --Oscar Wilde

Fashion Education – Poll Round Up

By admins | November 9, 2008

We have closed our poll regarding the best way to prepare for a career in fashion.  We are pleased to see that the overwhelming majority of you chose, higher education with a slight preference for a top fashion college over a traditional 4yr university with a fashion major.  With so many young people interested in fashion and wanting direction, we think the answer “go to school” is the most responsible.  While it is possible to make it in other ways, higher education is always a good start.

Now a top fashion school seems to be the winner here and it’s obvious why this would be the top choice.  You will get the most in-depth and thorough fashion focused education here.  Additionally, upon graduation you will be very desirable for any company, and have a strong background to leverage on if looking for backing or financing for your future label.  It is less common but possible to gain press and support while in one of these schools due to their internal ability to spotlight new talent to the media and fashion world. Finally, since these schools are often in the heart of NYC, Paris, LA etc.. you live, eat, sleep, and breathe fashion.  And you are exposed to amazing creative influences and opportunities.

A little less obvious is the argument for a traditional university over a fashion school which is, a better rounded education with science, math, foreign language and freedom to minor in a variety of other interests.  This is especially important for the simple fact that it’s something to fall back on if you decide fashion is not for you or you cannot make it in the way you hoped.  Additionally, many people branch out from fashion as they get older or move away from a fashion center, and a university Bachelor’s degree makes you more marketable in other fields. Finally, it will help you to obtain a MBA, which if you do proceed into a long career in fashion in order to become a VP for a major fashion company, it is often required and of course is helpful in being CEO & CFO of your own label.

So now it is time for a new poll.  We are curious as to what our readers are doing all day?  So fill us in on our new poll located in the left sidebar!
