Fashion Industry Job Recruiters…Where do they find these people?
By admins | August 7, 2008
O.k first let me preface this by saying, I have had some wonderful recruiters in the past and almost all of my jobs have been through recruiters, so they do serve a purpose. However some of these people are just out of their freakin minds. First off why is it when you are unemployed they never have a job for you but when you are working they will call you 10 times a day at the office to see if you can interview. Or how about how if you are say, a women’s intimates designer and your resume reflects this yet they will tell you they have the perfect job, “such an opportunity”, “you must go”, and no they can not give you the company name but it’s “right up your alley”. Then when you arrive you find it’s a men’s sportswear company! Of course when you tell the recruiter you will not be interested in this position you are met with the ever snotty “well i thought you were serious about getting a job.” Aughhh! Why can’t they do their job and stop wasting everyone’s time! Now some of these people remind me of the stereotypical Hollywood agent, the too confidant too slick guy trying to give you the hard sell or the 50 something lady with the long island accent and hoarse smokey voice who always just filled the perfect position for you but do you know anyone who would be interested in…(Sound familiar). And having used recruiters to hire people for me, why do they spend time finding out what you need in a candidate and then proceed to send people who have no experience, no interest in your product, or never used your computer program before. Then they call every 5 min. to see if you will hire them! “No? why not..give them another try..they could learn that..oh and they actually require a higher salary than your cap.” And they will continue to hound you 24/7(pun intended) as if you have nothing else to do with your time but go round in circles with them. It can be so frustrating! But the worst is when they do land you the job, (yeah!!) but then start calling every week to “check in”. Basically you know they are trying to make sure you stay 3 months so they get their commission check and even if you are miserable they will tell you anything from “just hang in there it will get better” or the fear tactic, “there is nothing else out here right now, everybody is making cutbacks, so you should stay.” And then finally when they realize you are serious and are not going to stay they start taking a very big interest in what you job entails, what exactly are you working on etc so they can find your replacement first. And the very next day you hear your receptionist paging the boss saying your recruiter is on line 1 for her!!

I agree 100%. I’ve just recently started using recruiters and some of them don’t look over your resume clearly enough. They don’t make sure that you are fit for that particular position. They just see your job title and take it from there. I ended up going to interviews and realizing that I’m not fit for that position. I just killed my relationship with that particular company thanks to them. I appreciate the ones that do pay attention to detail, but the rest are just a waste of time.

So sorry that you appear to have fashion recruiters from H-ll.
Am a fashion recruiter myself in South Africa, and guess the problems are similar here – except that our population is not on the scale that you have in the States –
I would suggest that you request that your recruiter has a photo of you on their database, a collection of your work (if you are in design, graphic) and of course your choose specality.
Make sure they are on programs like “skype” for easy access and if they run a network-worked database – that way you can have access to all their jobs and can apply directly to their clients? That is the way I see fashion recruiting happening in the future……you would need to be proactive as well. Build up a relationship with your favourite recruiter – let them get to know you, your work etc.
We as recruiters try to have this unique relationship with our canidates – it makes “comebacks” for us and them easier when they know you and you them…
Just a suggestion – great article…
