Fashion Industry Professionals Speak Out

By admins | January 6, 2009

If you have not yet read the ultimate fashion industry survey results, you are missing out on a lot of insider scoop!  24 Seven and Women’s Wear Daily have partnered together to create the, Apparel and Retail Industry Salary and Job Satisfaction Survey.  Together they have surveyed 2,600 public and private apparel industry employees.   There are 57 questions covering issues like, job satisfaction and compensation, and the results are fascinating.  This 64 page report is a must read for anyone in or entering the apparel business.

While we can not recap the entire survey here, we will point out a few tidbits that jumped out at us.  First of all, the industry is overwhelming female with design and technical departments reported being 82% female.  However, women dominate in every category except executive management.  So it seems the glass ceiling is alive and well in the fashion industry.  Another interesting result was the question of job satisfaction.  Executive Management, Operations, and IT were most satisfied; while, design, technical, and production were the least (okay, maybe we knew that but, we were hoping it wasn’t true). The salary ranges in some categories seemed very curious to us as well.  For example, the Technical Designer salary range was 35k to 105k, and the Design Director range was 40k to 700k.  For those of you who are students, or new to the business, it will be no surprise that employees under the age of 25 said overwhelming at 83% that the love of fashion attracted them to the industry.  An interesting point for all you managers and HR reps is the top 4 reasons that employees across the board decide to resign and move to another company are: better salary, better position, better growth potential, and better quality of life!

To read the full report click here.  This survey is a great resource for all industry professionals.  It will be especially helpful as a negotiating tool, when asking for raises and better benefits.  For recent grads it may help give you more realistic expectations of the fashion industry.  So thank you 24 Seven and WWD for all your great work!

whoa, that’s a serious glass ceiling, esp. considering the percentage of women in the industry.

This is the second year they’ve done it, we hope they keep it up. And yes, the gender inequality of power in the business is shocking!
