Fashion Interns…Spoiled Beotches!

By admins | September 26, 2008

interns.jpg

So here’s my rant for the day; I hate interns, well most of them anyway.  Over the last couple years I’ve had many interns from all different schools, towns etc.  They all seemed to have the same story, girl from some wealthy suburb of NYC, dad in banking/hedge fund/whatever, and she wants to be a designer and daddy knew somebody so she got the internship.  These spoiled interns are donning Marc Jacobs clothing and Gucci bags, that you know they can’t afford on their non-existent salary, while you their boss, is sporting a fall coat ala H&M!

Well my frustration hit the ceiling the other day when two of our office’s interns were workingchatting away.  First off, they spend half the day on their cells texting each other because they don’t care how much work they get done since they won’t have to stay late due to the 40hrs school credit rule and they don’t care if they get fired because they don’t need the money!  Whatever happened to a work ethic?  So what were they chatting about today?  Well whether one of them should buy (yes buy) a condo in Union Square that she found last weekend or stay in her downtown loft which is so much more fabulous but she shares with a roommate.  I swear to god I wanted rip their self centered, entitled little heads off!!  Thanks to “The Hills” every other intern thinks she’s the next LC and is just passing the time during business hours.   Alright I feel better…would it be too snarky to hope their dads worked for Lehman?

But what about all the hard working interns that don’t get the job afterward because that said workplace will just find someone else to use for free for 3 months. It’s a two way street of being annoying. I know there were plenty of places that wanted to hire me but couldn’t because I was still a student OR point blank told me that they can find someone else to possibly do as a good of a job for free and not have to spend any money on hiring someone.

I’m going to be interning starting in June for the clothing line Prairie. I worked my ass off getting a fashion intership on my own. I am a college graduate and will be working all summer for free and spending all my savings communting into the city so that I can hopefully gain a full time position.

I can’t even tell you how many say to me “Oh wow your going to be just like LC” It drives me crazy! I can totally understand your rant. If anyone has any advice for someone trying to dive headfirst into the world of fashion, feel free to contact me. Twitter.com/elanagreenfield
