Fashion Unemployment Brings Inspiration

Today we have a post for you from a fellow fashion industry veteran, who is not only a New York fashionista but also a fabulous fashion blogger.  Recently we stumbled upon a brilliant post on her website titled “I Got Fired From My Fashion Job: 5-Tips on How To Move On With Your Career” and we asked her to tell us a little bit more about her situation.

Last month, on Friday the 13th I was called into a conference room along with my co-workers where an HR director informed us that our office was officially CLOSED. I could not believe what was happening before my eyes, I found myself unemployed without warning and was shocked to realize that my company could not afford to keep my department open any longer.  I had been working for this accessory and consulting company for a year and half and like many other people in the fashion industry I was being directly affected by the crumbling economy and the struggling retail sector.

For my brief role with the company I was given a small severance and I applied for unemployment but this was not enough to cover my monthly bills. I decided to look for freelance positions until I found a full time job but to my surprise I found that the fashion employment ads have decreased tremendously.  You would think that someone who has worked with top designers and celebrities would have an advantage in this market, but in reality I haven’t had any luck at all. In prior years, I never had a problem landing a position, now it’s like searching for hidden treasure.  However, I was lucky enough to find a short freelance trend project for the Fall runways but two of my team members were let go and now I have the tedious task of completing a Fall report on my own by mid March.

Although, things may look gloomy, I’ve had the time to network online and have found many people that are in my same situation.  Sources like Linkedin and even networking with old colleagues on Facebook can help you find opportunities in the most unexpected places. I now carry business cards that I hand out to people I meet that work in the industry. My free time has also given me the opportunity to blog and to begin a small online store, something I never dreamed of doing before I was laid off.

I sometimes feel frustrated but at the same time I realize that now I have time for me. I never stopped to notice all the great things that happen in this amazing city, I have learned to appreciate everything each day. I hope my story helps others realize that they are not alone; we can only look forward to a better future and hope that the fashion industry will rise above this economic mayhem.

I think that this unstable economy makes us pause to be grateful for what we do have, even if that is not a job at the moment. Friends, family, health-take a minute to enjoy all those.
