Fashion Words We Wish Would Die!!
By admins | November 10, 2008
You know what we’re talking about, those overused words or expressions that are so cringe worthy you could just scream! Every industry has their own language and the fashion business is no different. These terms are so cliche and just plain annoying we would be happy to never hear them again! (Although we will admit to occasionally slipping and using one.) Feel free to add your own words in the comment section.
Pop -as in “those colors don’t pop enough”, “that print doesn’t really pop for me”, “we need a signature item that really pops”, “I love that style it just pops”, “this new line needs to really pop” ughh, whoever utters this word again is going to get popped!
At The End Of The Day - as in “at the end of the day the only thing that matters is what sells, not the design”, “at the end of the day the buyers just buy what they know”, “at the end of the day we all have to pay the bills, so suck it up”. This expression is almost always followed by bad news for the design, tech, or art departments. It is also often used in a condescending, I know more than you, tone.
Forward -abbreviation for the term, fashion forward. As in ”Oooh I love that design it’s so forward”, “Umm that’s a little too forward for our customers”, “Can you design something more forward, but you know not too forward”. Aughhh this word is so overused and nobody seems to know exactly what it means since being fashion forward is so subjective.
Fierce - as in, “that dress is fierce, hot, tight etc…” thanks to Christian from Project Runway this word will not die(even though it’s so last season) and is used to describe anything positive. Enough already people, we get it, you’re all fierce, now shut it up!
Wearable - aka saleable aka BORING! Whenever you hear “wearable” as an aspect of design direction, what the buyer/salesman/VP really means is, strip down your design to its most basic unoriginal form. Therefore they can easily (with very little work from the sales dept.) sell it in massive amounts and make tons of money, none of which you will see!
Dumb it Down - Often used in conjunction with “wearable” as a way of describing a “forward” style that needs to be revised in order to sell to the masses. Too depressing a concept to even discuss, but we’d be happy to never hear it again.
A Sense Of Urgency -As in “Looking to a hire a designer with a sense of urgency” which is code for, our company is seriously f*cked up and behind calendar and we need someone willing to have no life and work around the clock for us just like all the other crazy workaholic beotches here! If you ever see this in a job ad run away!

THANK YOU for mentioning ‘fierce’ – I hate that descriptor to no end. Tigers are fierce. Hipster t-shirts are not.

“Pair”, when there are clearly more than two items involved in the combination. As in, pair this silky top with this tailored skirt AND this swingy jacket AND chandelier earrings AND NO THAT IS NOT HOW IT WORKS ARGH

Integrity- as in “this sweater has so much integrity” or “the integrity of the top will get lost if we dumb it down” Inanimate objects do not have integrity… people do… but not people who use this word!!!!!!

What a great idea. Some things in fashion are just meant to make people feel good about themselves (like calling oneself fierce…).
I’d like to get rid of the term “on-trend” which sounds like telling a kindergartner to color within the lines…
