Fashionistas Going Green

Splash Green

(Fashion flashback originally posted on 4/07/08)

We all know we should go green.  We’ve seen Al Gore’s movie and know we’re killing our planet. Right now we have so drastically depleted our natural resources and polluted our environment that it seems like an overwhelming problem beyond our ability to repair. Yeah, sure, we change to energy saving light bulbs, and recycle our trash, but does that little change matter, and is there more we could do? Well, yes, it does matter; every little bit you do to reduce your carbon footprint the better. The good news for you is that as a New Yorker, your carbon footprint is already pretty low. You use public transportation and don’t heat and cool a McMansion so you’re already way ahead of most Americans!  As fashion industry professionals, you also have an opportunity to make an even bigger impact.

Eco-friendly clothing is not just good for our planet; it’s trendy and marketable as well! Green clothing has moved far beyond the occasional hippie hemp skirt. From Marc Jacobs to Stella McCartney, high end designers are going green. Even stores like the Gap and Banana Republic have had “Go Green” campaigns.  Believe it or not, Wal-mart has jumped on the bandwagon (although at their price point, it has proven more of a challenge).

So we encourage you to at least brainstorm on how to bring this idea to your company and incorporate eco-friendly items into your lines. So what are some ways for you to do this? Start with fabric; try using sustainable fabrics or recycled products. Organic cotton is huge for denim right now, and a great selling point. What about using all natural dyes for your fabrics and no more chemicals? For those in production/sourcing, try finding energy efficient factories that use solar or wind power. Too difficult? How about simply using recycled materials/paper for all hangtags and labeling? Or even, encourage your company to donate a percentage of its profit to an environmental charity. There are lots of options.  So for your next big design meeting why not bring “Going Green” to the table?

In our office, all the green initiative comes from younger, dedicated staff. They set a great example, but I have to give it to the old guys and their coffee mugs, they don’t use a single paper cup! lessons to be learned from both, I guess.
