Garment Center Unions unUNITE

By admins | August 12, 2009

Our Garment Center has a rich history going back to the turn of the century in domestic manufacturing.  The fashion industry and media often focus solely on designers, fashion shows, showrooms, publishing, and modeling, and they often overlook the production sector of our neighborhood.  The Garment Center has been and still is, home to many manufacturing facilities.  The garment workers who are employed there have had their rights protected since the 1940’s by the Union.  The garment workers union has provided generations of workers protection, fair pay, and even a health center.  A few years ago this union, UNITE, merged with the hotel and restaurant union, HERE.  After 4 years of chronic discord the two unions parted ways.  Unfortunately, HERE president John Wilhelm is attempting to seize the historic Garment District building, as well as, their union owned bank.  Garment workers and UNITE members are outraged to see what they have spent a lifetime building being snatched away.  For more information and to hear what the NYC Garment Center workers have to say please watch the video above.

This is horrible, please keep us updated. Heinous man to try and take such an institution and building away from these loyal, lifetime workers.
