Happy Halloween Fashionistas

Happy Halloween skanks and hoes! What?  Was that rude?  Considering the costume options floating around out there, that is apparently what costume manufactures believe the women of America to be.  So, when did Halloween become an excuse for grown women (or even teenagers) to run around the streets looking like two dollar hookers?  Are US women that lacking in creativity, that all we can come up with is a “sexy” version of a traditional costume?  Sexy nurse, sexy witch, sexy cat, even sexy nun, is that really the best we can do?  Despite the lines out the door at Ricky’s, we’d like to believe that our readers, being creative fashionistas, have far better costume ideas.  We’d love to hear from you.  What are you dressing up as this Halloween?  Was it a DIY or a store bought? What has been your all time favorite costume?

Recently, we saw that one of our favorite bloggers, Jessica Schroeder from What I Wore has been posting a wonderful series of her past Halloween costumes.  You must check them out as they are wonderful examples of what the creative mind can do. From Karl Lagerfeld, to Frida Kahlo, to Little Edie Beale, Jessica has done an outstanding job.  Her costumes are also a fantastic inspiration for those of you who need last minute, affordable, ideas that can be made from clothes in your own closet.  Whatever you decide to go with we wish you a happy Halloween, from 39th and Broadway!

Update ** We just realized that the lovely Jennine from The Coveted, has her Halloween series up, that you must check out for a ton of DYI costume ideas. Besides some great looks, she has this hilarious quote regarding the slutification of Halloween costumes, “not that there is anything wrong with being slutty (whatever that means) but looking slutty? That’s where I draw the line.”

Here is more related scoop;

Great post, I get so annoyed by all the skanky costumes. My boyfriend recently commented on the subject saying “aren’t girls supposed to slut it up for Halloween” speaking of the costumes. This coming from a guy who is not a bad guy at all. I guess he was just being observant.

I started making my costume a couple months ago based off of a leather dress I found while at a thrift store. It was in a native american style but a weird mauve color. I dyed it, handmade a feathered headdress, a leather belt with paint, some jewelry, and a feathered bustle for the back. You can see the trial run here, minus the bustle on back….

I’m going to do some cutting to add fringe on the sleeves and bottom before Halloween.

I love Jessica’s costume. Creativity was long lost on the average American woman when it comes to Halloween…here’s hoping it gets better this year.

And here is where I got my, umm…shiny undergarment…http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?ref=vt_related_1&listing_id=30933913

    =D

Oh, how fun to see other bloggers doing this! It’s always been one of my favorite series on the Coveted (because I’m kind of obsessed with costumes, in case you had NO idea ;) and I look forward to it each year… I’ll have to Jessica’s costumes!

Last night was the best. Halloween in New York, Fan-fucking-tastic! Hubs and I went as Don & Betty Draper.

Had to write a comment, because when we where waiting on the train platform, I saw the trifecta; slutty bunny, slutty kitty, and slutty bee. They all had on fishnets and hip huggers. Oddly the two guys with them where gangsters? Wish I had a camera with me!

happy halloween to you too! :) as for my costume, i refused to spend more than $20. and that was the cost of my blonde afro wig. i also don’t want to be stuck with a big costume that has no room on my tiny apartment.

    i loved jennine’s beetlejuice costume! :)

Living in a smaller town in the midwest I have to say the increase in “sexy” costumes is out of control!

Mostly because I see so many mom’s trying to relive their youth, perhaps re-interest a straying husband, or fulfilling a MILF fantasy, by throwing on some lingerie, hooker boots and cat ears. It’s really pathetic, and I think the real costume name should not be sexy cat or sexy nurse, but “desperate housewife”!

I loved this post and yes – looking slutty is not COOL!

    XOXO

I was Marie Antoinette (i bought a costume, and when it came, it was horrible, like a 3rd graders art project for way to much money) so i went to work…and i made the whole costume myself, it took me a week worth of sewing and my hair took 1.5 to do, 1 hr in my arms were falling off! but it was soo worth it!
