It Really DOES Hurt To Look Good!

By admins | June 4, 2009

MSNBC is backing up what we’ve all know forever, beauty is pain.  Any girl can tell you, from eyebrow plucking and underwires, to stilletos and bikini waxing, it hurts to look good.  Unless of course, you’re a guy then it’s ten minutes in the shower, a little hair gel and you’re good to go (bastards)!

So we weren’t all that surprised to see the national news reporting that our skinny jeans are actually harming us.  Obviously skinny jeans are super tight and by their very nature uncomfortable.  However, it seems they’re also causing a nerve condition called Meralgia Paresthetica.  The constant pressure of the denim can cut off the lateral femoral cutaneaous nerve.  Yes, seriously it’s true ladies. Parmeeta Ghoman is one fashionista suffering from this condition, and as a result of her wardrobe choices, had her legs become tingly then numb.  According to doctor John England of the American Academy of Neurology, “the nerve, in some people, is susceptible to compression.  It is a pure sensory nerve – it doesn’t go to muscles or provide strength.  Anything that is tight around there could potentially compress the nerve that goes there.”

The news gets worse, high heels (a major culprit for back pain and foot ailments as well) increases the risk of this nerve condition by tilting the pelvis forward and causing your skinny jeans to put further pressure on the thigh.  The good news is the nerve damage is rarely permanent and skinny jeans are on the way out anyway.  So, if you needed another reason to embrace the relaxed fit of the boyfriend jean, this one comes with a doctor’s note.

I know! I’ve gotten bruises on my legs from too tight jeans and now am no longer able to wear heels due to the damage I caused in consistant 4 inches+.

Sounds like one of these fake trends to me — gets written up in one place and all of a sudden everyone jumps on it and it seems like something that’s sweeping the nation. “Ooh, everyone’s dying of skinny jeans!” Yeah, right!

MizzJ – Don’t worry skinnies will phase out slowly, so you can still hang on to them. But just think how nice jeans that don’t slice into your waist when have that extra order of fries will be.
Eyeliah- Yes, high heels really are torturous, thankfully there are so many fantastic flats out now.
WendyB- What would we do without our urban myths? Personally, I think my bras have been plotting to kill me for years.

Ahh, love my skinny jeans! I actually missed this recent story about the nerve condition. I mean, my jeans are tight, but it’s not like they’re unbearable and cutting off my circulation. Interesting nonetheless. BTW, you have a fab blog! I read your profile on Dream Sequins. :)

    xo, Becs
