If you haven’t heard of Kira Plastinina yet, you soon will.  With dozens of her own boutiques worldwide this Russian fashion designer is fast becoming the hottest new thing.  So what makes her unique?  Well, she’s only 16 years old, how about that!  So how does a 16 year old develop her own brand and become a worldwide retailer?  One word; daddy.  Yes, Kira’s father is Sergei Plastinin the Russian orange juice millionaire.  Like many of us Kira loved drawing, fashion, and shopping as a child, however when she showed her father her sketches, rather than just complimenting her work like most parents, he offered her a clothing company. So are we the only ones who are sick and tired of all the celebs, spoiled little rich girls, and reality TV stars being heralded as fashion’s hottest new designers?  For those of us who spent years in school and worked our way up from interns and assistants, these stories are a slap in the face.  In today’s society skills and talent are readily replaced by money and marketing.   Does anybody really believe that this teenager who is marketed as the design director of an empire could even spec a garment or test a fabrication?  With all the press regarding Kira Plastinina out there the only slight implication of the truth is found in Wikipedia’s description, “However it is important to note that she has designers and stylists hired to work under her, and does not necessarily design or style her brand’s collections.”  So what do you think?  Are we all secretly jealous that we didn’t receive a fashion company as a sweet 16 gift or is this trend dumbing down the integrity of our industry?(For those interested, her newest store can be found on 34th St/Herald Square)

Saw her give an interview and she was asked to give advice to other young girls who wanted to be designers and she said it was from all her hardwork and you just had to be creative & passionate! Yeah that’s all you need. No mention of the millions of dollars in backing.

As a former KP Insider, I have to tell you…DON’T BELIEVE THE HYPE. At one point, when we were all TOLD that she was designing, we had an excuse for the stupid prints, awful fabrics, and shitty fits of the merchandise. Then, on the 3455th time they changed direction (after mass “lay-offs” which included EVERY African American person except one), they come clean and say that she is NOT the designer, but the figure head of the brand. Right. She’s also spoiled, bitchy, and not that smart. Her dad is a hell of a guy though.
