Lady Gaga got Denied

By admins | January 14, 2010

By now the world has embraced Lady Gaga and her bold fashion statements. Her outfits, or shall we say costumes, are as much part of her notoriety as her music. When she first appeared on the scene with the bleached out hair and unitard, we were not all that impressed with her style as we wrote here.  She has certainly come into her own and is always on the cutting edge of fashion, and often far over that edge. Her fame and style, lands her tons of press, media attention, magazine covers and more. So what designers would not want Lady Gaga wearing their designs?

Well, according to the Metro News designer Mark Fast would prefer Gaga stay away from his line. The designer said, “I love her music and that Bad Romance song is stuck in my head all the time, but we don’t necessarily have to accept everyone just because they are famous. My work is about a lifestyle. It’s not fast-food fashion. It’s not about trends, it’s about classic, it’s about the body, and it’s about beauty. Maybe that gets lost in the picture with certain celebrities.” What? From our above photos it look to us like Gaga and his aesthetic mesh quite well. And “about classic” is perhaps more suitable for Ralph Lauren then his pieces, right?

Passing up the media attention that would come from Lady Gaga wearing his clothing, not to mention the resulting increase in profits, seems downright ridiculous. In this economic climate picking and choosing your costumers is absurd and turning down free publicity is not bright. While it is understandable that when Lady Gaga wears clothes, she may overpower the brand name and perhaps style his pieces in a way not intended but that’s fashion, get over it! Does he plan to follow around all his customers to ensure they merchandise their outfits correctly or behave in a way compatible with his brand image? Cherry picking your customers is not a smart business plan, at all.

Although, now that we’re thinking about it, by denying Gaga isn’t Mark Fast receiving a lot more media attention than he ever would have? What do you think, smart business move by Fast, or incredibly stupid?

** Quick reminder to all our Project Runway fans -Tonight, Jan 14th, Season 7 premieres at 10pm on Lifetime. Enjoy some talented, up and coming, designers (who no doubt would kill for some Lady Gaga promotion) and check out PR tonight!**

I really think that most of fashion media is engaging in blind hero worship of Ms. Gaga, and I certainly count myself among her followers, but celebrities help sell clothes, so I don’t see why he wouldn’t want her to wear his things…

I totally agree with dreamsequins and the comment about “blind hero worship”, but I don’t personally appreciate her. I just don’t find her to be interesting, have an attractive aesthetic, or be an “artist”, as so many people do. I definitely respect the designer for not taking her on; she’s still a celebrity, still a fad, still something that he does not want as part of the image. Plus, just because we think his line looks like Lady GaGa’s clothing does not mean that’s the look he’s going for; it’s just what we have to compare it to. Besides, he’s getting the publicity and people who aren’t fans of Lady GaGa but still like his clothing won’t be turned off by his line.

Not sure if that makes sense. Kind of rambling, I suppose.

Somewhat unrelated but still interesting, a Tumblr I am following posted an amateur analysis of sorts on her, if anyone is interested: http://isabelthespy.tumblr.com/post/285497672/yeah-so-this-got-too-long-for-a-quote-post

I LOVE lady gaga, but I don’t think we should get all upset at him for denying her. I think he’s afraid of being just another jumper on the bandwagon, and that likely includes _any_ bandwagon, not just the Gaga one. Like you said, they have similar tastes, so probably if she weren’t surrounded by so much uber hype he may actually want her endorsement. It’s not about being dumb PR-wise, it’s about maintaining the integrity of his brand.

I like what MizzJ had to say – I think he may feel that Gaga has a expiration date too…

I am a fan of the Gaga as well, but I think your last statement is on point – he prob garnered more press by NOT using the superstar!

All I can say is that it would be quite a luxury to be able to pick & choose clients! This is a luxury I can not afford!

Well, I have to say, this Mark Fast person is stupid if he wants her to stay away from his line. But, if he’s all about “every day fashion” and not-as he so put it-”fast food fashion” then he’s really not much of a designer she would want to be near anyways. Gaga’s all about couture and HIGH fashion. She’s all BIG names and things you CAN’T wear everyday. But, she makes it work and makes it look AMAZING. So, this Mark Fast can keep his stupid line to himself. I highly doubt she’s grieving because he told her no.
