Lectra’s New Technology For Fashion Manufacturing
By admins | January 19, 2009

Lectra Systems develops software specifically for the fashion and textile industry. They have just announced their newest program called, Lectra Fashion PLM V1R5, its function is to better maintain the entire collection management process. Their products cover: design, pattern making, 3D prototyping, marker making, and collection management. Lectra is a Paris based company with over 35 years of experience in apparel technology. This newest product should take their previously programs a step forward and provide management greater control over performance. It is being marketed as a performance accelerator for fashion professionals which reduces time-to-market issues. As if that were not enough the Lectra Fashion PLM V1R5 is said to assist Human Resources in workload allocation and internal performance analysis. As usual Lectra is aiming high with some innovative concepts although, no word on the price yet.
Despite their specialized technology, they have not had as big a presence in the NYC apparel market as one would imagine. We personally have had very little exposure to any Lectra system and would be interested in hearing from anyone who has used it in the workplace. Having briefly used a Lectra design program many years ago, the results were far more aesthetically pleasing than an AI type program. This is mostly due to, being a pixel based software rather that being a vector based program. However, it was much too time consuming and expensive to be functional in the workplace. Lectra’s design programs always stood on their own and made it difficult to interact between design departments and sales/marketing/production etc. Having used a collection database system from Lectra more recently, it also proved to be more trouble than it was worth. That program’s purpose was to create a universal techpack that could be used company wide as a data-entry system from concept, to cutting, to production, to retail floor. An excellent idea, which in reality simply created more red-tape and bureaucracy while simultaneously resulting in increased production errors. We hope that this new program has taken the best of their previous endeavors and improved its functionality.

FG- Yeah, we get the same vibe!
IS- If you are trying to break in to the business, try working for a graphic company to learn the ropes first. Or work in-house for an apparel company in the graphic department. This will help build connections, experience and your portfolio, good luck!
