Lunchtime In The Garment Center

Lunch in the garment center normally means, grabbing a quick bite at the usual overpriced salad/sandwich shop on the corner, or reheating last night’s dinner in the company kitchen.  We recently listed our favorite neighborhood lunchtime eats in this post.   While many of you are familiar with these usual standbys, we’d like to mention a few lesser known spots.  Unfortunately, one of our favorites has just closed, so goodbye to Zest, we enjoyed you while you lasted although we won’t miss those prices.   So for all you foodies, next lunch hour try something new it may be just the thing to brighten up a dreary winter day.  If you’d like to add some recommendations please do so in the comments section, we’d love to hear from you.

Macaron – 36th Street between Broadway and 7th – This is our new favorite lunchtime treat, a tiny Parisian cafe is just what the garment center needed.  Named after the delectable French pastries they carry, their food is a far better quality than the typical sandwich shop but at really low prices.  You must try this place,  just plan on carry-out as they have very little seating. (Pictured above)

Zaro Bakery- 37th Street between Broadway and 7th – While Zaro’s kosher bakery has been around for over 30 years, this location is also a full deli and cafe.  It has the usual fare but is much less crowded than Pax or Metro and if it’s 1:00pm and you’re craving a bagel sandwich for lunch, this place can’t be beat.

City Burger – 39th Street just east of Broadway – We are a sucker for a great burger and while it has received some controversial reviews, we all agree these burgers hit the spot.  When a restaurant uses the same beef supplier as the Shake Shack, how can you go wrong? (Shown below)

Just Salad – 37th Street between Broadway and 7th – As far as salad places we have to put this near the top of the list.  Not only do they have great salads with a plethora of toppings for a reasonable price, but they give you a reusable Tupperware style salad bowl.  If you bring it back you’re helping the environment and will receive a discount on your next purchase.  Plus, like Europa and Chopped they actually chop your salad into tiny bits for you perfect for eating at your desk with no mess.

Viva Pancho – 44th Street between Broadway and 6th – The place to go for traditional Mexican and sneaking in lunchtime Margaritas.  It’s a great place for large groups and as you would expect from a neighborhood Mexican joint it is cheap, cheap, cheap.

viva pancho, here i come. thanks, there’s a dearth of lunch options on 34th Street, but ktown saves us. we were pushing the idea of a restaurant in the old florsheim’s space just north of Herald Square, but no, the landlord’s putting in a freakin bank. ARGH.

FH- That would have been a great spot, too bad! Although it’s farther down 34th you do have The Barking Dog, yummmm…
FG- For sure, give it a shot, you won’t be disappointed.

Our 9 year old granddaughter is interested in fashion. She will be visiting us from Florida the week of March 23rd and wants to see the “fashion district.” Is there a fashion museum or place we can take her where she can see the fashion industry at work? As far as we can see, the “district” is a lot of buildings but we cannot find an exciting exhibit or place to show her. Can you help??

Louise – Yes, our neighborhood is a fashion “business” district not really fashion shopping or museums. Although, 38th & 39th between 7th and 8th avenue has fabric, button, and trim shops she may find interesting. For museums definitely visit the museum at FIT (27th & 7th), the Metropolitan Museum of Art has the fabulous Costume Institute inside (81st & 5th) and there is the Museum of Arts and Design (Columbus circle). Enjoy!
