On January 20th history will be made when America’s first black President will be sworn in. Anticipation is running high across the country as people eagerly await Inauguration Day. This once in a lifetime event, is proving to be so exciting that ticket brokers are charging up to $20K a ticket. Besides the obvious political and historical meaning of the event, there’s also the fashion!
Trend setters around the globe have been speculating on Michelle Obama’s choice of inaugural gowns. The fashion expectations put upon Michelle Obama are high. She has been referred to as the modern day Jackie Kennedy, and is expected to bring glamour back to the White House. The choice of gown will not only set the tone for her image as first lady, but will also send a political message. Despite the Obama’s international appeal and our place in the global economy, it is believed that Michelle’s gown will and should be made by an American designer in the U.S. In addition, the last two first ladies were loyal to their hometown designers, so perhaps Michelle will choose a Windy City native. Fashion designers are clamoring for the opportunity to design for Mrs. Obama. Both the Washington Post and WWD have held competitions for designers to submit their inaugural gown sketches. As you can see from some of the sketches above, Michelle Obama will have no shortage of fabulous options. We cannot wait to see what she decides. For those interested, the less fashionable Obama and our future president, Barack Obama, will be sporting a new union-made tuxedo from Hart Schaffner Marx of Chicago.

I can’t wait to see what Michelle Obama wears to both the inaugaration ceremony and the ball.
I hope her clothes are both wearable and affordable to mainstream America.
