The Modern Cubicle
By admins | January 17, 2010
Okay, so not exactly fashion related but we couldn’t resist posting these photos. These designs from OfficePod are for new office space solutions. The original concept is for an at home office space set-up, but we would love to see these in place of office cubicles.
Cubicles are the impersonal cages of the modern day worker. Particularly in the fashion industry, where creative types should be in an inspiring environment with enough space, quiet, light, privacy, etc… to create; the current cubicle is a beige prison cell. At least the photos above would give us a more esthetically pleasing cell, with privacy! So for anyone who is sick of smelling your neighbor’s stinky fish lunch, or hearing your assistant whining endlessly on the phone about her latest bad boy, or having your boss sneak up behind you to “see” what you are working on, this may be for you. We love these little boxes, (as much as one can love a little box) they’re chic, modern, and if we want to talk with our recruiter about finding a new job with a real corner office, nobody can hear us!

Looks nice, but it’s still a tiny, claustrophobic prison cell. Like those pods from scifi movies, they remind me of the tiny “coffin’ hotel pods from the novel Neuromancer.
Corner office is not so great, either.
Cubicles are the phone booths of the future, no one will use them once telecommuting becomes more widespread. I recommend reading this award winning article: http://www.benjamingran.com/2009/12/01/cubicles-are-the-phone-booths-of-the-future/
No matter how nice and modern they look, cubicles suck. The corporate office environment is an abysmal prison.
