Sample Closet, Your Closet!
By admins | September 22, 2008
With a tight economy everyone must pinch their pennies when it comes to filling their closets, even you! So how can you get more bang for your buck? Well how about a wardrobe full of freebies, better known as the sample closet. One of the best perks of working in fashion is all of the fabulous free clothes, right? Well this is part true and part myth depending on who you ask. The sample closet is a great resource (if of course you are the sample size) full of your samples, your competition’s goods, reference samples, and worldwide shop trip goodies. Once the design team, tech dept, sales division are finished using them, samples should be up for grabs. However the truth of the matter is design directors and senior designers usually get first dibs on the best stuff before anybody else gets a chance. So while it’s the interns and assistants who do most of the running around, shopping and returning, photographing and hanging, and are the most financially needy they often lose out. Now with companies feeling the budget crunch shopping budgets are being cut back and many are no longer expensing samples so that closet is looking more barren than ever. Our best advice to you; keep an eye on what you want (maybe keep it at your desk for umm spec checking?) or mention a specific item to your boss (she may be more generous than you anticipated) or if necessary swift-tac your card to the sample. If nothing else keep in mind that one day it will be you who gets first pick. So good luck and happy shopping!!
