Shop Like It’s 1929
By admins | December 13, 2008
Being in the middle of the holiday shopping frenzy season, no doubt, you are spending countless hours walking around Soho looking for the perfect gift. Now what happens when, in the midst of shopping, you realize you’re starving and have no intention of dropping extra cash in one of Soho’s overpriced cafes? Well, the answer is you eat 1929 style, AKA, get in a soup line. Yes, you heard us right, a soup line!
During the Great Depression beginning in 1929, a quarter of our population was unemployed and our country was suffering from catastrophic poverty. At the time, to help feed the hungry, the government created soup and bread lines. Well, a new Soho Boutique named, “The 1929″, has been inspired by the Great Depression. The Mott Street store has racks of fabulous merchandise mostly by local independent designers. In its lower level it houses an art space and a spot for hungry shoppers to grab a free bowl of soup or cup of joe. The young boutique owners were also inspired by Obama’s spirit of collaboration and wanted to create a business that would bring together indie designers and young price conscious customers.
So help support a new small business (at 174 Mott St.) where you can shop til you drop and actually eat for free in one of the country’s most expensive neighborhoods.
