Skin Is In For Fashion Magazines
By admins | January 5, 2009
We may not be the first to write about this, but we must at least comment on the excessive amount of nudity suddenly appearing in our fashion magazines. While you may expect a bit of nipple (okay a lot of nipples) from European magazines, it is rather uncommon to see entire photo spreads in U.S and foreign fashion magazines sans clothing. Aside from the token Abercrombie & Fitch catalog, clothing is the focus of a fashion shoot, not the naked body. It seems that lately that fashion magazines have decided to forgo the fashion and instead focus on the young nude models. Fashion and culture magazine, Gravure, just had a 28 page spread of barely clothed models, and New York’s Tar magazine’s recent debut issue featured a 34 page fashion spread minus the clothing.
So what’s behind this recent trend? Well, there are many theories circulating out there such as: fashion’s vanity and obsession with the perfect body is to blame, or the recession has depressed editors and stylists alike so they have no vision for their spreads. Perhaps this is the fashion industry’s subliminal message that we have bigger things to worry about right now than deciding what to wear, or maybe the magazine business, like the rest of the fashion industry,is suffering from slowing sales so they have decided to go with, the ”sex sells” campaign.

I like the idea of the subliminal message, although considering the weight of my last couple issues, the sex angle sounds a little more realistic.

I guess they are trying to be a bit arty, and using fashion photography rather than the clothes themselves to sell the magazine. Personally, I do like to see clothes in my fashion mags…

Maybe you could edit the webpage name Skin Is In For Fashion Mags | 39thandbroadway.com to more generic for your blog post you make. I liked the the writing all the same.
