Spring ‘09 Fashion Week!
By admins | September 2, 2008
It’s that time of year again; NYC’s Fashion Week is upon us once again. For many this is a busy time, making a mad dash to finish collections and tweaking last minute adjustments for their shows. For the rest of us it’s a week of watching and waiting to see what our favorite designers have to inspire us with. Over the last week we have seen our favorite lunch spot, Bryant Park, being overtaken by the big tents, and soon our neighborhood will be overrun with models, photographers, and celebrities. I for one, love these few weeks of the year when every-time you step into an elevator you are surrounded by models and realize, surprisingly, you don’t feel fat and ugly in comparison, but rather small and cute while standing next to these Amazon women.
So here’s the scoop; Mercedes Benz Fashion Week starts Friday September 5th and runs through Friday September 12th in Bryant Park. For all the details and schedules please visit, www.mbfashionweek.com. Some of our favorite designers who will be showing are: Tracy Reese, Diane Von Furstenberg, Zac Posen, Charlotte Ronson, Tibi, Carolina Herrera, and 3.1 Philip Lim. Some other favorites won’t be at the tents, but are showing at satellite locations around town: Yigal Azrouel @ 540 West 21st Street, Ralph Lauren @ 275 Hudson Street, and Donna Karen @ 711 Greenwich Street.
Whenever fashion week rolls around I always come back to the same memory, a few years back I had a co-worker who had worked for Victoria Secret. She was a designer who had put in many many long hours working on the runway line for the first network televised VS fashion show. However when fashion week rolled around and the VS Angels strutted down the runway, was she there to see her work go down the runway? Of course not, she was back in the office tech-packing the cotton panties that are their bread and butter. It was just so sad to hear her tell this story and when a year or so later I saw JLO strut down the runway after her show my heart went out to all the real designers who had actually worked to put together that line. So anyway, for those of you who aren’t invited hear are some tips on how to get in;
- Network, use all your contacts, put out the word that you are looking, use every connection no matter how remote. You never know who will come through for you.
- Make a night of it, the W Hotel has a package deal you get a night in a suite plus 2 tickets to the shows
- Show me the money, yes you can buy tickets online, we found some for Michael Kors and Anna Sui for about $800.
- Wait on line, some shows let non tickets holders in for standing room only after the ticket holders are seated
- Volunteer with 7thonSixth and help work the shows
- Sneak in, hey fashion students do it!

Very unique perspective, I think perhaps your story is very common but often overlooked. Interesting points.
