Sub-par Working Conditions in the Garment Center

By admins | September 4, 2008

rat1.jpgInspired by a comment that one of our readers left in the forum, regarding the company Cherry Stix, we decided to write this post.  Many years ago one of us almost worked there, after several rounds of interviewing, and a “project” she was offered a job.  Before starting she asked to see the work environment and the design director took her on a tour of the design area.  That’s when she saw it, the infamous NYC rat, as it scurried from under a desk into a rack of samples, her decision was made.  More recently, this same designer worked for another company on a higher floor in the same building, 1407 Broadway.  Once again she encountered rats!!!  Not just a few, but a true infestation, rats scurrying around at night, nesting in fabric swatches, and using desks as bathrooms, it was revolting.  While many consider cockroaches and rats an unavoidable downside to living and working in NYC, this building seemed particularly over the top.  We suspect one of the root causes for this is Harry’s Coffee Shop located on the ground floor.  This restaurant has been closed down by the NYC Health Department several times.  So we are curious, does anybody currently work in 1407?  If so, any furry friends in your office?

Here is more related scoop;

    Yes we still have our furry friends living here in 1407, many of them, it is just a part of living here in NY. I have eaten at Harrys and have had a roach run over my plate of food, upon which I complained to the waitress that I did not want the food, the owner was devastated that I did not plan on paying for the food. I told them to call the police, but there was no way I was paying for the food. I just got up and left.
    Be careful because the other critter that I seemed to have come across is grass hoppers, I have found a few in my salad from local salad places. Just be sure to look closely at your food before you eat each fork full!!
