Are Working Conditions In The NYC Garment Center Sub-par?

Inspired by a comment that, work one of our readers left in the forum, regarding the company Cherry Stix, we decided to write this post. Many years ago, one of us almost worked there, after several rounds of interviewing, and a “project”, she was offered a job. Before starting she asked to see the work environment and was taken on a tour of the design area. That’s when she saw it, the infamous NYC rat, as it scurried from under a desk into a rack of samples; her decision was made.  More recently, this same designer worked for another company on a higher floor in the same building, 1407 Broadway.  Once again she encountered rats!!! Not just a few, but a true infestation, rats scurrying around at night, nesting in fabric swatches, and using desks as bathrooms; it was revolting!

If you are not a local, 1407 is one of the largest and most popular buildings in the Garment Center.  It houses hundreds of brands like Nicole Miller, Dollhouse, and many private label companies too.  It is nice that the lobby has gotten a bit of an upgrade, with all the flat screen monitors, but the building is still pretty rundown.  The hallways and bathrooms need a face-lift and the heating and cooling issues are beyond frustrating, but by far the worst problem is, rodents.  While many consider cockroaches and rats an unavoidable downside to living and working in NYC, this building seemed particularly over the top. We suspect one of the root causes for this is Harry’s Coffee Shop located on the ground floor. This restaurant has been closed down by the NYC Health Department several times. So we are curious, does anybody currently work in 1407? If so, are there any furry friends in your office?  What about other buildings; how are your working conditions?

For those of you locals who work in the garment center, we have a few more random questions for you today.  So please visit our forum and help contribute your two cents.

Not that recent, but a couple of years ago, I had a consulting gig for a junior company in 1407. Of course, we worked really late, and one night I saw rodents running around (and this was on one of the top floors!). I reported it to the office manager, but don’t know whether anything was ever done about it. I never liked that building and always hated going there for interviews and meetings.

jclover & Lauren- Let’s hope it’s improving. It has seemed that the building managment is aware of the problem but could care less.
    Iole- Thanks, love yours too!

    Hi ,

I would like to share about the ERP product software, I found the same software in one of my friend’s company, he has maintaining many areas and activities in his factory. I hope this software would really help our Apparel and Garment Manufactures industry.
