Valentino The Emperor

By admins | March 24, 2009

We love, love, love Valentino!  The man is a fashion genius and is one of the few who can really be called a haute couturier.  He is a fashion inspiration known for opulent gowns and exquisite craftsmanship.  Recently, the 77 year old was on The View promoting his newest endeavor, a documentary.   After retiring from the industry a few years back, Valentino decided to make a documentary of his own life and career humbly named, The Last Emperor. While charming and elegant as usual, we were underwhelmed by The View YouTube clip we saw.  When asked how he felt about the Valentino line ever expanding to include a mass-market project, the designer visibly recoiled at the suggestion and quickly replied, no, no.  When then asked, how he felt about the high-end fashion industry ignoring the plus size market, he skillfully avoided answering.  We guess, to Valentino, only the rich and skinny deserve beautiful clothing.  All of this, in addition to the fact that, Valentino has turned slightly persimmon, making him resemble an Umpa Loompa (a taller better dressed one of course).

Despite all this, Valentino is still an idol of ours and will likely remain so.  We are all looking forward to his new movie that debuted last week in NYC.  It really is fascinating to see a glimpse into this side of the fashion industry, as well as, his own personal struggles.  Here is a trailer for all of you to check out; it looks delectable.

Hiya! I recently saw this at Film Forum and actually blogged about it. Apparently, the designer struggled with early cuts of the film and at some point during the documentary, storms off camera and makes it seem that he wants to halt filming altogether. It’s a really funny, moving and lighthearted film which was made by an outsider to fashion, a writer for Vanity Fair who happened to do a profile on him, then decided to put the film together. So the observations of the fashion world are really insightful. I would definitely recommend it!
