Yankees + Curry + Garment Center =?

Yes, sounds odd, but these three things do have something in common; Go! Go! Curry.  One of the best little curry joints in NYC, is located in our neighborhood on 38th street between 7th and 8th.  While there are many kinds of curry, (Thai curry, Malaysian curry, the popular Indian curry) this is one of few restaurants to serve the elusive Japanese curry.  Go! Go! Curry is one of the most popular Japanese chains in the world, yet their only US location is right here in the Garment Center.  If you haven’t been before, you must check it out and sample some of their delicious, slightly sweet, curry roux on rice also known as Kare Raisu.

So, what does this have to do with the Yankees?  Well, the entire curry joint is a shrine to honor Yankees hitter Hideki Matsui.  The walls are covered with photos, caricatures, autographs, and newspaper clippings of Matsui.  But the owner Hiro Kazu Miyamori is more than just a fan.  Miyamori actually started the restaurant when he was inspired by watching Matsui hit a grand slam. He named the restaurant Go! Go! Curry because “Go” is “5” in Japanese and 55 is Matsui’s number.  The restaurant often has special promotions and coupons in honor of Yankee wins and Matsui milestones.  Last Thursday after the Yankees and Matsui won the World Series there was over 300 Matsui and curry fans lined up on 38th street to get their lunch!

Regardless of your baseball affiliation, this is a delicious affordable Japanese curry joint.  And unlike last week you should be able to run in and grab your lunch fairly quickly now.  So try something new for lunch and check out Go! Go! Curry.  Who knows you may even run into Mr. Matsui there.

What an interesting sounding restaurant! They totally need Japanese curry places in London. Hope you’re having a lovely weekend.

Who would think that a curry place would have such an interesting back story?

In my humble opinion, Japanese yellow curry is the best kind of curry :)

I wish I had tried this when I lived in NYC. I really miss the diversity I had there.
